Out with the old. In with the new.

Our beloved Flames will be starting training camp in a couple of weeks. And after they get reacquaint themselves, ask how each other’s summers went, take those lovely player photos we all adore so much, it’s time to get back to work. Drills, meetings, and scrimmages are a part of training camp, but this year is different.

Don’t worry. It’s a good different.

What the Local Calgary Media is Saying about Bertuzzi

Mostly the interest surrounds his a) move from rival Canucks (you rarely see high profile players move between rival teams…only say the likes of Glencross….no pot shot to him,) and b) his continuing saga re: problems with lawsuits.

Flames Players Starting to Arrive in Town

It’s almost September which means the Calgary Flames new signings are trying to find digs to set up shop. Players without families tend to move in around the ‘Dome, whereas the family guys (and of course bigger contract guys, since these days your avg. salary barely gets you a nice house in Calgary….) get the suburban dwellings on the lake.

FlamesForum eyes have heard rumblings of Curtis Glencross, among others, setting up in SW Calgary just outside of the beltline–a nice quick drive to the ‘Dome on quiet days. Others are coming off vacations at their nice lake houses (in Canada or heck, even Finland.)

All of this means one thing, puck drop is soon, pre-season and training camp even sooner…..Just over a month, can’t wait!

2008 Free Agency Debacle – Teams Overpay

July 1st marks the opening day in the NHL for free agency. What does that mean? For the pats couple years it’s the first day struggling hockey teams can pay exorbitant amounts for semi-decent hockey players. We’ll let TSN and the Calgary Herald point out the debacles for you–we’ll stick to the moves that impacted the Flames.

Stupidity Returning to NHL Contracts

Ryan Malone Worth More Than Iginla

This is how the NHL owners messed up the first time (actually, not for the first time.) Players who didn’t deserve big contracts were for some reason being overpaid. What this does in the simplest terms is put marginal players at a premium thereby driving the whole salary expectations for all players up. At the end of the day, players hold out for more money, owners pay it out, and 5 years from now we wonder why there’s a lockout. The only difference this time around is a ‘salary cap’ exists restricting the money teams can shell out (or it would be a free for all for rich teams.)

That begs the question, “who’s overpriced” and who will become “overpaid” in the free agent market set to open July 1st. One thing is for sure, nobody is ‘overpriced’ if the team is worth spending the money. Take the case of Ryan Malone, a 51 point getter in a ‘break out’ season for the Penguins last season.

Greg Nemisz Picked First (25th) by Flames – Player Profile

Greg Nemisz The Calgary Flames used their pick (moving down 17 to 25th via Alex Tanguay trade, which was a separate deal from the Cammalleri trade) to acquire centerman Greg Nemisz from the OHL Windsor Spitfire. Here are some articles and below that a player stats profile.

The Flames had a number of chances to scout Nemisz as he played on the same team as last year’s, who passed away last season, prospect Mickey Renaud. So in this case the Flames have seen Greg a bit more than an obscure prospect across the globe.

Flames 2008 Draft Coverage – Flames Trades and Rumours

Calgary’s looking for a forward, I guess we have depth at the back end? Definitely the teams have goalies galore, but what about a #1 C? Let speculation run ramped. Olli Jokinen to Calgary for Regehr? Tanguay goes to Montreal for a pick, and pucks. Flames get nothing, etc. Whatever, let’s wait and see, SOMETHING will happen so stay tuned.

4:50PM update: Check out Fan 960 for wicked radio coverage. It’ll beat the TSN TV coverage.

Fan 960 won’t be doing the draft (too bad), they’ll pipe in the NHL radio feed.

5:00PM: TSN page to Tanguay rumor. Not confirmed. If it’s true expect Calgary to turn the pick around and get someone in return (Jokinen).

TSN still talking about Tanguay to Montreal and now saying the Flames pick up Cammalleri.

TSN:

Calgary sent their first-round selection (17th overall) to the Kings who then ship that pick and the 28th overall selection to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the Ducks’ 12th overall draft pick.

Jokinen chats done. He’s off to Phoenix for 2 d-men (Boynton and a pick). Seems the rumors of Regehr for Jokinen were true, as in that’s what Florida was asking.

Oh yea, Stamkos goes #1. But we’re more about the Flames right now.
