Welcome back Flames fans to another year of hopes and dreams. This year`s Calgary Flames show a bit more youth and promise than previous years, but fans are still wary whether the product has changed enough to make any legitimate push for the post-season, let alone a deep run.
I`ll keep this particular post-game report short as most saw the game unfold. First things first, with two centerman out, the Flames had to improvise. Apparently that means taking a third line winger in David Moss and putting him on the top line. Why this makes sense is beyond me and the experiment failed just like it failed last year.

The Calgary Flames closed their 2011 pre-season 9 days before the October 8th season opener. Phoenix visited and provided the stiffest competition yet in pre-season action. For their part, the Flames had most regulars in less the top line.
The game itself was sort of back and forth (a way to say boring) in the first period. Things turned around with a couple of second period goals on the powerplay.

The 2011-2012 pre-season opened with a home at home split game between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. Although Vancouver failed to play anybody with any form of skill, the highlight was Calgary’s young prospects. The Jay Feaster era has begun and many new faces have been added to the mix.
Some highlights of last night’s two games were certainly the new prospects.

The Flames closed the season much the way they opened, with a loss. Albeit this time they had a bit more jump and provided home fans with some entertainment. The Flames were playing for nothing. Mostly the same with Vancouver. Nonetheless the teams put on a good show. Calgary went up to lead 2-0 dominating most of the play. But eventually special teams and quick transition play by the Canucks tied things up.
Cue OT where most fans expected yet another shoot out (Flames have seen OT 23 times this season). The didn’t ge tthe SO, and Calgary lost 3-2. Karlsson in net did OK, Iginla was his usual self, and the rest of the team was mostly absent.

In a meaningless game that I wasn’t going to bother covering two newsworthy items.
1. Jarome Iginla registered his 1000th point in a three point night. Anybody who advocated this guy’s trade mid-way through the season is a moron. almost 40 goals and 90 points. No bad for an ‘old guy’. Happy to have Iginla come back next year for another 90 points (why not?). Let’s hope the rest of the team decides to show up too.
Admittedly, Iginla hasn’ tbeen around every game, he scores in bunches, but you can’t argue with almost 40 goals.

Nothing to report, just that he Flames didn’t show up yet again. They don’t have gas in the tank it seems.
Which is a good thing, because now we can expect the same wholesale changes we were looking for in December.

If I had stopped watching this game, which most probably did after two periods, we would’ve had a summary that including blasting overpaid hockey players for failing to show up to work.
The Calgary Flames are fighting for their playoff lives. The Edmonton Oilers are a team of minor leaguers, young talent, and veteran hacks.
Calgary actually had most of the chances in the first half of the first period, and most from Jokinen. He was robbed on an open net chance, and then fanned on a glorious chance in the slot.
1-0 at the end of one period; Calgary looked out of sink, slow, old and confused.

Mathematically the Flames are still in the playoff race, but as a team they are so far behind the level of the playoff bound teams that I’ll conclude along with others that it’s over. Here are the reasons why:
4) Major injuries early, but what really hurt were injuries down the stretch at an already weak center ice position late.
3) Inability to beat teams around them in the standings (and when they did win they needed to do it in regular time!)
2) Underachievers. A lot of 20+ goal scorers but that doesn’t matter in a 5-2 game, it matters when you score GWG in a 3-2 game!
1) Obviously, they forgot to show up for the first 35 games of the season.

“If they don’t score on this powerplay we’re done.”
I said that 5 times.
I was right, it just took longer than expected.
Calgary can still make the playoffs but it’s going to be damn hard from here on in. They’ve lost too many games they need to win, and unfortunately at this point in the season, given their terrible first half, they need to win them all.

Call the ‘referee ombudsmen’ because there’s something fishy about this one. The NHL should be embarrassed when referees make such unabated attempts to skew the outcome of games. Conspiracy theorists will giggle with glee that Gary Bettman’s policy to prop up American teams in struggling markets is working and confirmed.
All kidding aside, Calgary dug themselves in a hole early but clawed back to take a late lead. At that point the refs took over with exceptionally questionable calls.
In all seriousness, the NHL can’t afford to have such important games at this late stage in the season determined by excruciatingly pitiful officiating.
