The All-Star break was anything but for Flames brass as they made two deals that opened a roster spot on the big club and added some depth on the farm. Firstly, in a surprising twist, Brendan Morrison saw his time with the Flames end after being traded to Chicago in exchange for minor-league vet defenceman Brian Connelly.

The move gives the Flames some cap room and another spot to potentially bring up certain contracts from the minor leagues (Krys Kolanos anybody?) Morrison's injuries and lack of offensive production made his spot expendable. The Hawks will probably find use for him, albeit only as a fourth line plugger.

The Flames today made another minor trade sending John Negrin to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for RW Akim Aliu. YOu might remember the name from the infamous fight between he and Steve Downie in the OHL (Same team) after Aliu refused to be hazed. Since then he's bounce thru the minors unable to find a consistent game. He'll bring size on the RW for the AHL Heat. Going the other way is John Negrin, once highly touted defensive prospect, who's been on the decline spending time int he ECHL this year. Flames have a glut of D men so the move shouldn't leave an unmanageable hole to fill.

The question of course is who's next? Will some team be stupid enough to take Matt Stajan? How about Cory Sarich? Any takers?

The Calgary Flames actually 'won' a trade. How about that?!

Calgary acquired:

Michael Cammalleri (LW)

Karri Ramo (G) (apparently the top goalie in Europe right now.....)

5th round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from Montreal

Montreal in return receivs:

Rene Bourque (RW)

Patrick Holland

2nd round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft

The difference in salary is about 2.7 million in Montreal's favour.

How rare is it that Calgary acquires the better player in a deal? Admittedly, the price for 6 million and ten goals sounds like another Matt Stajan bust, Flames fans for the most part seem positive.

For one, they get rid of Rene Bourque who's streaky play and seemingly lazy attitude raised the ire of most fans (other than teenage girls who really dug Bourque's looks).

Calgary also picks up a top goalie prospect who's currently playing in the KHL.

For their part, Montreal picks up Bourque who can score in spurts, and also an interesting prospect in Holland. One would think that when Montreal wakes up from this trade news they'll eventually see they came out on the losing end. Maybe a snap decision after some recent Cammalleri comments on the recent Habs losing squid? We'll never know....

What we do know is that Mike will be in the lineup Saturday to face the Kings and the old boss who didn't believe re-sining the 39 goal scorer was a priority.

It was way back in 2009-2010 when we had the idea Sutter's moves were crippling the team. Slowly though the team Sutter destroyed through stupid moves, is slowly being rebuilt, or at least the pieces that used to make sense. Sure, Cammalleri's best days may be behind him (the pessimist would say), but we can't argue that the Flames took this trade.

Your thoughts on the trade?

Why? Probably a salary dump. Calgary Flames have shed more salary by dumping Daymond Langkow's 4.5 million salary in favour of a much lighter cap hit of 1.9 million. The new management is certainly putting their stamp on the team literally nixing many of the expensive contracts of the Darryl Sutter era. (Why wasn't it Stajan though, oh right, no team is stupid enough to take him, mind you, Buffalo did take Kotalik....)

Flames fans have few reasons to be excited for the upcoming season, Langkow was one of them. A chance to play a full year with a top centerman might have been the edge the team needed. Instead, the logjam at the C position, including the aged Morrison and apparently David Moss, are the solutions for the Flames at C. I'm not sold.

See what others are saying:

Is Backlund or MOrrison the answer to our C woes? Not even close. Although this provides cap space and depth behind Jarome Iginla at RW, I'm not sure it improves the team a whole lot, albeit we are now a few years younger.

Proponents of the trade suggest that Langkow was due for a 50 point season tops, not much help to the Flames at his price tag. For our sake I hope they're right.

As one Twitter user said: Imagine what Phi, Was, Bos, Pit would've given 4 Langkow @ deadline. Feaster worked again.

Hindsight is 20/20 and we'll never know what Feaster tried, but you can wonder about return....

The depth chart behind #1 & #2 defencemen Bouwmeester and Giordano is looking mighty thin. On the LW there's TJ Brodie sitting #6.... Although he has skills is he ready for the big time? After Gio there's Sarich with that veteran presence, Babchuk who's played the easiest defensive minutes, and a bunch of new names like Butler, Mikkelson, Carson.....

Some serious question marks remain on D for the Flames, one thing is for sure, we'll be average at best back there, coupled with 'average' at the forward ranks (albeit with quite a few 20 goal scorers) and you have an average team right up against the cap.

Back to some signings. Mikkelson accepted his qualifying offer and will be back. The Flames also signed Derek Smith off the free agent market to a two way contract, he'll play in the minors unless we have some serious injuries.

Feaster padded the minors with the signing of tough guy Leblond out of NJ. HEre's where you get a head scratcher. NJ wanted him gone, and Feaster paid the price with a 5th round pick. Why?

On the open market you can get a guy who can't score or skate, yet fight, for free. Feaster's card was, "getting a guy hard to play against and who can skate". Leblond does one thing and that's fight. He'll add much needed toughness in the AHL but that was a steep price to pay.

Rounding out the singings was Max Reinhart who gets a three year entry level contract. I'm also perplexed by these kinds of contracts. Although they don't count against the cap, these players really get 900K to play in the minors.....sweet gig.

Here are some fights from Leblond:

The deal is reported to be worth around 18 million or 3.4 million per year, largely a steal for Tanguay who could've received more cash on the open market, but probably got a front loaded contract with additional years.

Flames Re-Sign Karlsson

The Calgary Flames announced the signing of backup goaltender Henrik Karlsson to a two year one-way deal worth about 860K a year.

Karlsson played in 17 games last season with the Flames, and despite a losing record, showed glimmers that he's a competent backup.

Karlsson, a native of Tumba, Sweden, was originally acquired by the Flames from San Jose at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Calgary’s 6th round pick in the 2010 Draft. He finished the season with a .908 save percentage and a 2.58 goals against average.

Two more years may imply the Flames aren't ready to bring up anybody from the minor league. Irving could use another year or two in the AHL to assert himself as one of the elite goalies, which he hasn't done as of yet.

Your thoughts on the signing?

The Herald is reporting that Glencross has signed a deal reported to be worth about 2.55 million a season. The signing means the Calgary Flames secured their third line winger who occasionally played up and certainly overachieved this year with over 20 goals. Is $2.55 the right money for Glencross?

A couple things to consider. Players who score 20 goals can typically expect about what Glencross received, if not more. The question will be can the banner year be repeated? Glencross showed signs of promise this past year, but to sign someone long term, perhaps with a no-trade-clause (yet another one) means things could go awry a la 'Matt Stajan'.

If you wish to be reminded, Stajan will earn 4 million this year to do nothing. Glencross, albeit at a lesser amount, will now have the microscope to contend with this upcoming season. What are your thoughts? 2.55 too much for 43 points once?

The other question remains: what has really changed with the Flames? Or a better question, what CAN change?

Too many players with no-trade clauses, and already they're up against the cap.

No wiggle room, no changes, does that mean no playoffs? Too soon to tell?

It's weird, two months ago we would've seen this day as a sell off of Flames asset. Today we see a team struggling for a playoff position and an acting-GM who doesn't want to mess with the existing chemistry. That's a tougher position than an all out sell off like Ottawa's doing.

Nonetheless, follow our tweets @flamesstamps for the latest updates regarding Calgary Flames trades and rumors.

Updated additions after the jump.

We can be sure Feaster won't make a splash like Sutter was known for (JOkinen! Jokinen again!)

Update: 10:00AM

Waiver wire claim.

Calgary Acquires Brett Carson off of waivers from Carolina

A young minor league defensemen with ties to the Calgary Hitmen. Feaster wanted to shore up the D but instead of a vet he got another Mikkelson.... His stats

2008-2009

Hurricanes

5 games four points

2009-2010

Hurricanes

5 4games 12 points

2010-2011

13 Games 4 points

Calgary also picked up Fredrik Modin late at the deadline. Apparently it's cool to stock up on washed up LWs (Kotalik, Modin, Hagman).

Feaster obviously has history with Modin from his time in Tampa, but that was SEVEN years ago. HE hasn't scored more than 10 goals since 2007. Will Modin bring enough to help the Flames? And who will drop out of the lineup to make room for him?

Modin Stats: He has 10 points in 36 games this season.......*sigh*

<del datetime="2011-02-22T20:58:52+00:00">Rumors are starting to come through Twitter that $3 million dollar man Nik Hagman has hit waivers and that the Maple Leafs have picked him up. </del>Can't confirm as of yet, but this is a questionable move, one of the first from Feaster. Hagman has under performed, but not as bad as Matt Stajan. He's been stuck in the dog house and the fourth line for over a month now, and yet you still had hope his skill set would eventually get him back on the goal scoring path.

We are certain Hagman was placed on waivers. Whether Toronto put in a claim at all, and whether they'd be successful remains to be seen. Hagman still has 3 million left on his contract this and next year.

Feb 22nd Update:

No move for Hagman, he cleared without a team claiming him. The rumors that Toronto was going to pick him up were just that--rumors. Hagman will in fact suit up tonite against Boston and maybe we'll see a renewed Nik Hagman....

So far this season, in 58 games, Hagman has only 9	goals and 15 assists.

This would put the Phaneuf trade, the brilliance of Darryl Sutter, at:

Calgary gets Stajan -- Toronto gets Sjostrom, Aulie, Hagman?, Phaneuf

This is REALLY messed up.

It also means a) Feaster is instructed by ownership to shed salary, b) Kotalik is back up, lol, c) making cap room for something bigger.

The Calgary Flames announced a trade with Carolina that sent Sutter and White for Babchuk and Kostopoulos. The move saves the Flames some cash, adds a fourth line winger (cause we really need more of those) and puts a big shot on the point for the PP.

Apart from that it's pretty much a bust. What are your thoughts?

The trade also means the Phaneuf trade now leaves only Stajan and Hagman.

I haven't watched Carolina much this season but this FlamesNation post sums up how we got pretty much nothing.

How this makes the team better? Maybe an extra few points from the point on the PP? More character in the lineup?

Pretty much pans out to the annual useless veteran/overpriced forward Sutter gets every year. Only this time Kostopoulos has an extra year (like Wayne Primeau only cheaper!)

So this trade is meh. But maybe the 'shake' up is what the team needs.

Oh wait, they lost again tonite.....

Notes: TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that the deal was done before Sutter got into trouble in Phoenix.
