The AHL announced Knights’ goaltender Curtis McElhinney has been named to the 2006-07 AHL Second All-Star Team.
A second year pro, McElhinney has helped the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to their first Calder Cup Playoff berth. In 52 appearances this year, the native of Calgary, Alberta has posted a record of 31-16-1. He ranks third in the AHL in wins and goals-against average (2.24). He is tied for second in shutouts (6) and fourth in minutes played (2,871). McElhinney has twice been selected the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week and represented the Knights in the 2007 Rbk Hockey/AHL All-Star Classic in Toronto in January.
A guess a bit of a goaltending controversy brewing in the AHL? Good for us, we need a backup for next year.

Just in time for the game against Phoenix. This means the Flames are getting Yelle back? tonight. Also bad news for the defense, Warrner, Zyuzin, and Hamrlik are probably all out. Warrener and Hamrlik out for a longer period of time IMO.

While the Flames site second last in theWest division, the Omaha Knights are on a happy 5 game win streak. The Knights beat the San Antonio Rampage 4-3 on the weekend for their latest win.
The Knights opened the scoring early in the first period when Brandon Prust collected his first goal of the season just 56 seconds into the game. Richie Regehr took a booming shot from the blueline. It hit ex-Flames goalie Phil Sauve in the shoulder and dropped behind him. Prust raced in and poked the puck into an empty net.
Their increased 2-0 when Dustin Boyd took a drop pass from Tomi Maki and beat Sauve with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season. The second period began much the same with another early Knights goal. Carsen Germyn earned his second goal in as many games when he finished a two-on-one rush with Boyd at 1:17.
Knight's goalie Curtis McElhinney’s eventually had his shutout string at 93:28 end, but it's nice to see him play solid hockey down south.
The Knight’s power play actually scores, Boyd found Dave Moss alone in front of Sauve. He slipped the puck home for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Andrei Taratukhin earned the other assist.
The Knights kept San Antonio pinned into its own end for most of the third but in the late going, the Rampage pulled Sauve for an extra attacker and got a break when Brett Palin was whistled for cross checking. With a six on four advantage, Helmer got his second of the night to make it 4-3.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 5-0-1-0.

Two come from behind wins gave the Knights 4 points on the weekend. Warren Peters scored with just 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Knights a 4-3 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday. It was the Knights’ first ever win against the Griffins, and it came in front of a sell-out crowd.
The final play of the game came in the last ten seconds when Matt Ellis was whistled for tripping. The Knights worked a perfect face-off play, and David Van der Gulik hit a streaking Peters who tipped the puck past a helpless Liv for the game winner.
The Knights dropped all four meetings with Grand Rapids last season, three by just one goal. They remain unbeaten in regulation this season, improving their record to 2-0-1-0.
The second game saw the Knights score four third-period goals to beat the Chicago Wolves 4-2 on Sunday night. The win, and Saturday’s 4-3 win at Grand Rapids, came against a team expected to be among the best in the American Hockey League this season.
The Knights had three powerplays in the first period but never scored. The 1-0 lead held until the third period when Kris Chucko broke in alone down the right wing. He faked a slap shot to get goalie Michael Garnett out of position before beating him with a wrist shot for his second goal in as many games.
The Knights took their first lead of the game at 8:36. Warren Peters was sprung down the left wing on a pass by David Van der Gulik. He lofted a pass to the slot that Cam Cunning tipped past Garnett to make it 2-1. It was also Cunning’s second straight game with a goal.
The eventual game winner came on the Knights’ eighth powerplay of the game. Dave Moss passed across the slot that Dustin Boyd slapped to the top shelf for his second goal of the season. Brad Ference picked up the other assist.
The Wolves pulled Garnett for an extra attacker and got the game back to within a goal when Darren Haydar converted a net-mouth scramble to make it 3-2.
But with Garnett still out, Brett Palin sent Justin Taylor away for an empty net goal to seal the win.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 3-0-1-0 through the first two weeks of the regular season. Brent Krahn played both games.

The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights beat the Milwaukee Admirals 7-1 on Saturday night at the Bradley Center. It was the first win of the regular season for the Knights who improve to 1-0-1-0 on the season.
In the first period Tim Ramholt was whistled for a penalty just 40 seconds into the game, but it was the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights who would take advantage. Andrei Taratukhin blocked a shot at the point and raced the other way, converting the breakaway for his first North American pro goal.
The Knights followed with a PP goal (unlike the Flames) when Brad Ference sprung Dave Moss down the left wing with a sharp pass from center. Moss then slipped the puck to the slot where Dustin Boyd beat goalie Karl Goehring with a backhander for his first professional goal.
That string continued late in the period when Justin Taylor handed the puck back to the right point where Brett Palin wristed the puck through traffic and past Goehring to make it 3-0 after one.
In the second Ryan Donally scored off a rush down the right wing for his first pro goal at 9:09. Then after weathering an extended five-on-three penalty kill, the Knights converted another powerplay when Moss fed Richie Regehr for a booming slap shot that beat goalie Scott Reid who began the period in relief of Goehring.
Early in the third period, the Knights continued their barrage. David Van der Gulik notched his first pro goal, slipping the puck underneath Reid while reaching around from the side of the net. Moss then made it 7-0, converting off a netmouth scramble for his team-leading third goal of the year.
Curtis McElhinney was strong throughout, particularly when Milwaukee had the five-on-three in the second. The only goal to beat him was a powerplay tally by Alexander Radulov with less than seven minutes to go. McElhinney finished with 26 saves.
The six goal margin of victory is the largest in Ak-Sar-Ben Knights’ two-year history.
The Knights return to action next Saturday, October 14th when they visit the Grand Rapids Griffins for a 6:00 p.m, The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights host their home opener on Friday, October 20th when they welcome the Syracuse Crunch. If you complain about the NHL schedule you should see the AHL one. The Knights have a week off this week and then two weeks later play 3 games in 3 nights.
