The Calgary Flames landed in Detroit at 3:30 AM local time thanks to some ridiculous scheduling and bad weather. Thankfully, the Flames put in a valiant effort in a bid to regain top spot in the West Division. Coming off an inconsistent effort in Montreal, Calgary put in two solid periods but succumbed to the overpowering Detroit team. Calgary lost to an elite hockey team, Calgary is not an elite NHL team. However, they are a much improved team that is doing just that, improving game in game out.

Calgary is in what used to be the toughest division in hockey. With Minnesota, Colorado, Edmonton, Vancouver, all mostly rebuilding, Calgary probably doesn't skate with the hardest in the league. As such you'd expect the Flames to be dominant in the West, and although they teeter on the edge of number 1 in the division, they are to flippant and inconsistent with their game to truly take it to the next level.
Surprisingly Calgary beat NY because most people thought NY, Montreal, Detroit were all going to be losses. Why not, Calgary does not compete with the elite teams in the NHL period. Montreal came out to play, and although Calgary played hard, their game is not up to par.

Entering St. Louis Calgary embarks on one of their longest road-trips of the season. On year ago the Flames turned their crappy season around by winning six straight on the road. The importance of this road trip for the notoriously inconsistent Flames will probably impact the regular season results in a big way. Too bad the team showed up dead in the first, part of the second, but returned for some reason in the third.
The referees appeared to be letting the teams play but Calgary quickly got down 2-0 off a powerplay and regular strength goal. Terrible defensive play by 'one a day' Dion Phaneuf and the inability for Jarome Iginla to play defense (the same two every game lately on defense) contributed to the crappy first. Thankfully both responded on the other side of the puck.

Sean Avery, given undue attention by local media regarding comments he made earlier in the year regarding the 'boring Mr. Iginla', was suspended before he could even face the wrath of the Flames. The NHL suspended Avery (Dallas would have if they hadn't) for comments he made regarding Elisha Cutherbert, current girlfriend of Phaneuf and ex-GF of Avery.
"I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada, I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."
Let's hope he gets demoted to the minors permanently. Too bad he didn't play come to think of it. The intensity was absent, the Saddledome was quieter than a high school volleyball game, and the Flames were faced with a trap style Dallas Stars.
In fact, Avery clearly did his part to completely shut down Calgary stars, well perhaps that's a bit far, but Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla both had poor games, the former the worst game of the season. Calgary as you see, couldn't beat the league's WORST team.

Natural Hat-trick Mike Cammalleri
A red hot Vancouver Canucks team welcomed the Calgary Flames for the third game between the two teams and the first of a brief two game home-at-home series. Vancouver is unbeaten in 10 whereas the Flames are on-again off-again winning two of the last three. Calgary had the most to prove getting beaten badly by Vancouver to open the season.
The start of the game had less apprehension and energy as the season opener, however, the teams quickly found their feet and started the crashing and banging.

The off and on-again Calgary Flames returned to their winning ways at home defeating the rebuilding LA Kings--one of the youngest teams in the NHL. The City was abuzz from the afternoon celebrations with the Calgary Stampeders at Olympic Plaza. Although only 12000 showed for the party, 19000 packed into the 'Dome, of course, you wouldn't know it given the library quiet crowd.
Luckily the Flames didnt care and produced a high-scoring outing for a team that has only playted outside of California five times this season.

Calgary Spends Entire Game Shooting Straight at Goalie
Two steps backwards and one step forward. That's the way the Calgary Flames have been six game winning streak in October. Two divisional rivals faced each other for the third time this season with Calgary taking the first two. Calgary returned home to play against Colorado and a hot Peter Budaj. The Flames faced the same stoic netminder, albeit they didn't test him hard, but they did throw over 30 pucks at him, 20 blocked, after two periods.

Fans Pissed for Paying PPV Fee for Garbage
Re-match from last season's opening playoff series, only problem, just one team showed up. The Calgary Flames left home to fly to San Jose to play against the nearly perfect SJ Sharks. Turns out they should have stayed on the plane. When playing against the elite teams, Calgary, still, year after year, are marginal at best. Mike Keenan attempted to rouse the troops in Calgary against Toronto and succeeded to some degree thinking he found gold with an Iginla Boyd Glencross line. Nothing translated to success tonight.

On Remembrance Day, the Flames almost scorched the Leafs with a 4-1 lead, and it was, by far, their best performance on ice: they controlled the face-offs, played well in the defensive zone, and made smart plays offensively. Despite all the right moves, they won by just one goal; but managed to get the well deserved two points.
