Calgary 2 - Washington 1

Note to Tyler Sloan --> Don't Turtle and you'll stay in the NHL

For some reason TSN loves a story, well actually for good reason, they're TV. Tyler Sloan fresh, off a venture in the minors, opened on D for Washington and made a good first impression pasting Daymond Langkow in an open ice hit. Rene Bourque answered the big hit by dropping the gloves, which Sloan did too, stick, gloves, but then the guy turtles like a *insert simile here*. Buddy, you're in the NHL, answer the bell and maybe someone will actually RESPECT you. It was RENE BOURQUE not sucker punch Bertuzzi, BOURQUE! Yet the turtle and the blind refs bought the act and gave Bourque 19 minutes of penalties including a 9 minute powerplay to Washington. NINE MINUTES? The guy dropped his gloves and stick man!

Disappointing Loss: Flames 3 - Oilers 4

A pitiful (4-3) loss for the Flames bashes everyone’s hopes for the newly rejuvenated team. Two critical factors played an important role in last night’s Oiler win – Deslauriers and the number of powerplay opportunities - three powerplay chances that the Oilers had capitalized on.

First Home Win: Calgary 5 - Colorado 4

TSN Launches Hockey Song (a bit weak on the brass)

Calgary netted their first of the season at home against division rival Colorado. Jarome Iginla lead the way with the Gordie Howe hatrick although certainly fans would prefer him to score rather than fight. I got it, tell Jarome to get out of the scrum, and if he tangos with third line scum, beat up Sakic. Send Prust to punch the junk out of Sakic. That would send a message to other teams to stop throwing fists with Iggy. Ok, maybe not, leave Sakic alone, but someone should jump in on his behalf once in a while.

Calgary opened quickly again scoring twice on the PP in the first, yet were still the victim of weak defensive play.

Re-Match: Calgary 4 - Vancouver 5 (OT)

Refs Duped Again - Dive by Johnson - No Call in OT Hand Canucks Win

To get the season started the league pitted two division rivals against each other back-to-back. Smart move, what better way to renew hatred and heated debates? Fresh off their worst season opening game ever, the Calgary Flames made their home opener debut seeking retribution.

With less fanfare than the Vancouver home opener, Calgary got underway with a renewed emphasis on hard hitting forechecking and puck pursuit. However, despite a semi-raucous crowd Vancouver drew first blood which made Flames fans wonder if they were about to witness another debacle. One of the Sedin sisters walked out in front and scored the first goal to put Vancouver up.

Unlikely sources of inspiration came in response. Rather than using his fists, Andre Roy was left wide open in the slot and wired a slapper through the five-hole of Luongo. That was the spark Calgary would need, what ensued was two more goals in less than two minutes from Bertuzzi and Bourque. Perhaps a reversal of fortunes in the Flames favour this time? Iginla wanted to continue the fortunes by dropping the gloves with Mitchell in a spirited affair.

Second period: Both teams came out with speed and fists in the second period. Both Roy and Prust stood up and got beat up. (Is Roy another Mccarty just a bit bigger? He left the game with an arm injury after his tussle but returned in the second.) Calgary slowly abandoned their intense forechecking game after a few powerplay opportunities that spent its time on the perimeter, Vancouver took advantage by moving their feet.

Poor offensive defensive coverage (make sense) coupled with some shaky goaltending and Calgary saw a two goal lead fizzle in 1:01. The Flames looked like the team out of Vancouver where rookie D men were victimized and Vancouver forwards were allowed to sit in front of the net unpunished and untouched.

It seems this year Calgary needs to figure out their special team play because powerplays dwinddle the momentum. Too early to tell I suppose. However, 5v5 play is where Calgary finds their feet, rushing up ice with--yet again--their forechecking. After a long chance by Vancouver Dion Phaneuf was able to catch Rene Borque with a stretch pass. A quick move to the inside and a rebound to the stick of Mike Cammalleri for his first as a Flames.

Third period began with less emotion but more questions on Calgary's defensive play. Both forwards and D men are losing their men in front of the net, something that can be fixed but shouldn't be an issue for a 'defensive team' like Calgary. Sedin yet again was left alone in front to collect a pass and tie the game.

Calgary received their sixth powerplay of the game with seven minutes left yet their inability to get pucks to the net prevented any sort of opportunity (0 on 6). Vancouver got their change off a horrific call after an unreal dive by Johnson. The powerplay would, after the final buzzer, spill over into the over-time period. An un-easy 30 seconds elapsed as Calgary managed to kill the Bertuzzi penalty.

With a minute left Burrows makes a clear trip that should have been called (being a homer? unlikely, an opportunity was taken away and no call.) On the ensuing rush (off a Cammalleri giveaway) Burrows broke in on a 2v1 and connected with Pavol Demitra for the OT win for Vancouver.

Another handed win to Vancouver courtesy of the refs. The cause of Calgary's loss? No not really, a definite help, but Calgary shot themselves in the foot with their terrible D zone coverage in front of the net. If they can fix that then they'll have a chance to win some games.

Notes: Marc Crawford again on the colour. Dude makes up words doesn't he? Girodano continues his difficulties adjusting to NHL defensive play. Mike Cammalleri who's supposed to add goal scoring couldn't even play on the second line. He was used for less than 11 minutes all game.

Flames Embarrassed in Opener: Canucks 6 - Flames 0

Defensive Mistakes Makes Vancouver Look Goooood

The season opened, and it couldn't have finished for the night any faster. Face it Flames fans, it doesn't take a rocket scientist or (or a shinny goalie) to figure out the Vancouver Canucks will fizzle and scrap for the playoffs. They are a junky team with few real name players but a good goalie. The only problem, Calgary is worse--much worse. In a pathetic display from coaching to goalie to forwards, the opening game gave Canucks fans fat egos and exposed gaping holes in the inept Calgary team.

After an exceptionally long start time that favoured the Canucks (puck drop at 8:50 local time) Calgary showed glimpses of dominance. Earlier penalty trouble gave Calgary glorious chances with the man advantage including a 5v3 yet Calgary was unable to score. Read the rest of this entry »

Pre-Season Concludes: Calgary 4 - Edmonton 3 (OT)

In one of those days where Calgary sports fans were in a conundrum, the Calgary Stampeders kicked-off at 8PM, the Flames concluded their pre-season at home against their provincial rivals the Edmonton Oilers. The spirited fight filled affair saw the Flames come from behind and win in OT thanks to ex-Oiler Curtis Glencross.

Pre-Season: Calgary 4 - Oilers 0

Folks, the top line did nothing, but with almost a complete lineup in tact it was--get this--secondary scoring. David Moss continued the scoring trend and the new Matthew Lombardi is Dustyn Boyd. After years of non-existent scoring from lines 3-4 (sometimes 2), the Flames added players, Bourque, Glencross, etc., who have improved the team on the tertiary lines. The only issues seem to be finding chemistry on the top lines. No problem in our opinion to place Cammalleri on the top line instead of Bertuzzi. However, get this, Cammalleri was doing the 'Tanguay' and killed penalties for spots in the first.

Yes it's the pre-season but I'm wary.....Curtsy M (I can't spell his name) went the distance in goal.

Pre-Season 2: Flames 3 - Coyotes 2

Welcome Flamesforum readers to our first post-game, albeit pre-season, of the 2008-09 NHL season. Tonight the Calgary Flames picked up their first pre-season win in their second attempt versus the Phoenix Coyotes at the MTS Center in Winnipeg. The old Jets returned to their old home to a fan base that's--well--changed somewhat in the favour of the Flames. Both teams skated lineups without their top stars--likely slotted for tomorrow's rematch in Calgary--but the game wasn't without its excitement. Read the rest of this entry »

Flames 3 - Sharks 5 : Sharks Win Series 4-3

Typical Flames Show Up - Inconsistency is Their Game

After a convincing 2-0 win at home against the Sharks in game 6, Calgary looked to move ahead to the next playoff round tonight in San Jose. Sports enthusiasts pegged San Jose with all the pressure coming into game seven and Calgary all the experience. Turns out everyone was wrong. The Calgary Flames were victimized by their consistent MO--inconsistency. Few can point to two consecutive games (other than the run in December) where the Flames were able to string solid back-to-back efforts. Tonight was no exception, from puck drop to final horn Calgary was a step behind and played more reminiscent of a pre-season game rather than a game seven.

In no particular order here are the top reasons why the Flames were manhandled.

Flames 2 - Sharks 0 : Series Tied 3-3

Flames Deliver Shut Out Performance

There's one good thing about the recent snow dump in Calgary--it feels like hockey. Cold, snow, ice, that's what old-man winter brought over a month into Spring. Cold, stone-wall performance is what Miika Kirpusoff and the rest of the Flames delivered to the SJ Sharks at home in the Dome. Kipper made made 21 saves as Calgary once again kept the Sharks shot total below 25 for the second game in the row.
