Flames Close With High : Calgary 7 - Vancouver 1

Jarome Iginla Scores 50 for Second Time

Iginla 50
Just for a moment something weird happened in Vancouver. Despite chanting 'Calgary sucks' for most of the game, canuck fans cheered for the Flames, maybe even twice, but only for a moment. A meaningless game for the hometown team points wise, the game had a number of other highlights that one rarely sees in the game of hockey. The two main events that took center stage weren't the game itself but Iginla's chase for 50 and Trevor Linden's possible final game in the NHL.

Stomped Again: Flames 1 - Wild 3

Calgary played a regular game, nothing out of the ordinary, good grit, generally stuck to the system, but they just couldn't match the Minnesota Wild. That's right, the Flames can't handle the Wild, they were overwhelmed, didn't have answers, hardly pushed, and were outscored (obviously). Imagine when Calgary plays San Jose in the opening round. Someone get the brooms.

Terrible Again - Flames 2 - Canucks 6

Playoffs in Doubt - Countless Lucky Bounces Give Nucks the Wing

This was supposed to be the game that the Flames would win, they are on the every other game plan you know. Turns out, half of it was true. On one hand the Flames had their typical quick 'every-other-game' start. David Moss, finally factoring into the line up with Daymond Langkow heading back home for a family matter, scored a nice tip in to shut the home crowd up early. That would be the extent Calgary's dominant play. 1.5 minutes in the first and after that the team folded it in and took the night off. Sure they skated hard, but big deal if you have no purpose.

Inadequate - Flames Loose Again 2-1

Inadequate. That's the only way to sum it up. One lucky goal by Matthew Lombardi made the score somewhat respectable, but at the end of the day, and this late in the season, Calgary stunk out the joint in the final home date of 2008.

The Edmonton Oilers, fraught with injuries, have the same amount of wins as the Flames, an apparent veteran club with some marquee names. The goes to show the extent the team has underachieved and coasted through the season. Either the Calgary Flames aren't as good as people think/thought, or they're lazy.

Flames 3 - Canucks 2

The NW division pre-playoff race is in full swing and Calgary is 2-1 in the series. Tonight, things looked bleak at home. Two goals in less than 20 seconds in the first and being outshot 20-4--things looked bleak at home. Calgary did their usual no-show in the first 'every other game' and the home crowd were stunned the trend still continues. You really begin to wonder why the Flames don't play 60 minutes--those games win cups--but alas, they prefer the nail-biters.

Flames Scoreless Again - Flames 0 - Avalanche 2

What do you get with a team that is in desperate need for some additional scoring other than Iginla? A shutout loss of course. Bad discipline and zero scoring or continuity with line combos yet again caught Calgary and handed them their loss in a crucial NW division game. If Calgary can't even SCORE against the Avs what prevents them from being swept in the first series ASSUMING they make it to the playoffs? Too many Flame players are slumping at the wrong time (which is pretty much every single forward).

Iginla Scores Hatrick: Flames 5 - Wild 4

There are few teams that stand up against the goons that the Minnesota Wild have stacked their team with. Ultimately the likes of Fedoruk, Boogaard, and Simon may contribute to the demise of the team (with only three playable lines), but in the meantime the Calgary Flames stood toe-to-toe against the divisional rivals. All the goons fought in this format: Godard v Boogaard (draw), Vandermeer v Simon (Simon edge, p.s. Jim, tie your helmet on tighter), and Sarich v Fedoruk (draw). Two in the first five minutes and Sarich in the third. The goons did their thing and the Wild tried to build but Calgary answered. What the Wild couldn't do was respond in kind to answer the likes of a dude named Jarome Iginla.
