A complete game? Not quite. A better start? OH yea. Calgary came out big in the first period, taking to heart their coaches warning about their lackluster efforts in practice by putting together a better product in the opening frame. In Anaheim the first period was killer. In Coyotes it was the difference. Two early goals put the Flames permanently ahead, and although the Coyotes pressed hard in the second, Calgary held on for the win with the top line coming out and showing some scoring flash.

Are the Ducks really THAT good? Sure they reaped the benefit of 'timely' un-retired players, but are they THAT dangerous? Admittedly, the team has a number of working parts, but man, if their goalie interference and instigators are called as per rule book then I can't see them going past the first round.
Then again, what do I know. This type of hockey is coveted by the NHL and heck they do win. But tonight, 3 posts and untimely penalties (yet again), and non-existent scoring (yet again) were key contributors to their win.

Chalk one up for the refs--again. Calgary succumbed to their repeated trips to the penalty, including a WEAK OT call against Iginla, by allowing two goals, one in the final frame and one in OT. Despite leading for almost 45 minutes Calgary dropped a much needed point to a re-energized and suddenly healthy interdivisional squad. By the way, this season Calgary has been dismal against NW division teams (don't have the stats in front of me right now but it's a losing record.)

Coming off a solid (although not 100% convincing) win against Detroit at home, Calgary had a chance to push closer to number 1 in the NW division. Coming into a usually hostile Minnesota building it was the visitors that came out flying. Calgary limited the shots for the Wild to 8 in the opening frame and also managed a special teams goal. Jarome Iginla made a sweat pass to Langkow across the crease to put the Flames up 1.

Calgary arrived in Dallas at 4AM to finish their five game road swing. A win would help them salvage a road-trip with six overall points. Not so bad given the two game loss debacle early in the week. Last time these two teams met Calgary was embarrassed, actually that's seems to be the case for the Flames every other game.
Calgary jumped out to the 1-0 lead off a PP goal from Tanguay--his first in 16 games. Before that Iginla settled scores with Ott, the NHL's new brand of 'tough guy'. By tough guy we mean players who run for cheap shots but will never fight unless they outclass their opponents. Not a chance Ott would fight Godard or risk being knocked out. Same with Smith (less the knock out part). But he found a partner with a willing Iginla in a draw (or marginal win for Ott if you count throwing punches while a players is on the ice.) Seems every team has their coward. Ours would be Phaneuf--oh wait--he fights.

I only caught about half this game, but WTF?! Honestly, people, please, explain what the hell is wrong with this team? Great showing tonight, a near complete game, but they crap their pants for the two games prior? Are they going to poop the sheets tomorrow too? We'll see. CUJO may get the start too.... but then again you never know.

Calgary Flames Just Can't Produce On Ice
This team's gotta be bi-polar. Fresh off their most recent California shalacking against the lowly Kings, Calgary came out with a taste of bitterness against the Ducks. A sense of urgency, something that's seen every other game for this team, was injected into their play as bodies were flying and the forecheck was moving.
Eric Godard got things moving for a change, picking up a legit 5 minutes with his fist-a-cuffs with tough guy Perros. We'll call it a draw in the fight, but the team was dragged into the battle.
