The trade dust has settled and a few more pieces have been added to the convoluted puzzle that is the current Calgary Flames. The forward problem was partially taken care of when Disting Boyd was traded away to the Nashville Predators for a lowly fourth round pick. Calgary is short on picks, and they are also short on NHL caliber players chosen from drafts in the past. With Dion Phaneuf and Dustin Boyd gone, there are no currently Flames on the roster that Sutter successfully drafted. That's not entirely true as we've called up Mikael Backlund so that would be one.

Follow FlamesForum on Twitter @flamesstamps for latest details on Flames trades.
Looks like despite holding 25 forwards the Calgary Flames have opted to move and solidify their backup goalie position acquiring Vesa Toskala from the Anaheim Ducks. Details and confirmation to come. Confirmed by Fan960 and TSN.
Still not sure where the money comes from or where all these forwards are going to go!

News out of the Calgary Flames office today is that after the Bourque signing they like Matt Stajan enough to give him a four-year deal worth 3.5 million. The price is right, let's hope he performs up to expectations (2 million less than Jokinen, and 1.5 mill less than Langkow).
Stajan was pegged to be a UFA at the end of this season but it appears he'll be staying on-board for a few years to come. Nice to see that commitment from someone who would have gotten a lot more in free agency.
More details to come.

We were wondering if UFA Rene Bourque would be back next year, or whether the Flames would yet again part with another LW. Turns out he has signed as reported by the Flames. Yes, there is still NHL hockey going on despite the country being glued to the TV to watch the Canadian men and women go for gold.

The news finally went through, a day late, but it's final.
Some bad news coming out of Flames land yet again, this time another deal, which would be considered blockbuster if it weren't for yesterday's transaction, with under-performing centerman Oli Jokinen at the heart of the matter.
The deal involves Jokinen and Prust to NY Rangers for Ales Kotalik (remember him from Edmonton) and Chris Higgins.

The only worthwhile draft pick of Darryl Sutter's entire career as GM has been traded to Toronto for little more than a defensive defenceman, two UFAs, and Niklas Hagman. Sutter traded Dion Phaneuf in a monster blockbuster trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Phaneuf will find a fine home in Toronto and the Flames will rid themselves of an underachieving and overpriced defenceman. One thing is for sure, Phaneuf isn't a 'Derek Morris' and will certainly blossom into star defenceman that will leave Flames fans shaking their heads in two years time.
By that time Keith Aulie, defensive prospect for Calgary now with the Leafs, may also crack the lineup in Toronto and show everyone why he's made the national junior team. Calgary on the other hand will say goodbye to Mayers, will high give Hagman for his defensive game, and will have one of White or Stajan, but likely not both. So the trade amounts to Hagman and White? for Phaneuf.
Point Burke.
The Trade:
To Calgary: Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Ian White
To Toronto: Dion Phaneuf, Fredrick Sjostrom, Keith Aulie

**TSN Confirmed***
The rumor mills from some reputable sources are heating up over at TSN that Dion Phaneuf has been traded for a bag of hockey pucks. The overpriced but highly touted Phaneuf was traded to Toronto for two unrestricted free agents, one at the end of his career, the other an underachieving LW, a defenceman who's a notch above Cory Sarich, and Hagman.
Darren Dreger reported a blockbuster trade that will see Calgary pick up White, Stajan, Mayers, and Hagman for Phaneuf, Aulie, and Sjostrom. To me this sounds like way too much given away by Calgary. Phaneuf is improving although still below expectations, but replacing him with White, a cheaper Cory Sarich, and giving away a prized defensive prospect in Aulie isn't the answer. This is a loose for the Flames. Stajan and Hagman will give us some relief up front, but they aren't the scoring touch we need.
If Sutter literally 'gives away' Phaneuf I can't see fans being thrilled even if it is the bad ass Phaneuf. Sutter DID give Phaneuf away. More details to come.

The final free agent (restricted) has been signed after the Wayne Primeau move. Dustin Boyd will be back, and let's hope he packed on 20 pounds so he can take his game to the next level. The Sun is reporting Boyd signed a one-year, $650,000 one-way deal.

The Flames have added new tough guy, former Ottawa Senator Brian McGrattan. The six-foot-three, 235-pounder was an unrestricted free agent.
McGrattan, 27, played more than 140 games for the Senators before he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for a fifth-round pick in June, 2008.
After just three games with Phoenix he voluntarily entered the substance abuse program administered jointly by the NHLPA.
