With Edmonton pulling out all the free agent deals, Calgary jumped into the mix with another minor move acquiring Alberta boy Rene Bourque, a native of Lac La Biche, from Chicago. Bourque finished his third season with the Blackhawks in 07-08, recording 24 points from 10 goals and 14 assists.

The Calgary Flames announced the re-signing of centres Craig Conroy and Daymond Langkow, left wing Eric Nystrom and goaltender Curtis McElhinney. This answers some questions regarding the future of Conroy and the backup goaltending question. What is yet to be seen is which players on waivers will be picked up and which other UFAs will be signed (Vandermeer and Yelle?).
A complete outlook of the Flames' payroll situation will follow.

Reported by the Calgary Herald, Warrener, Nilson, and Eriksson have been put on the waiver wire in hopes another team will pick them up. If not, the Flames will have options to buy them out at 2/3's their salary.
Other news, looks as if Mark Girodano will come back to the Flames with a new multi-year deal. Will keep you posted on this news. We'll also be releasing a salary outlook/expectations for the upcoming year and discuss who will fill some of the holes.

The West just got tougher, and it's the top teams that bolstered their lineup. With a few hours before trading deadline the San Jose Sharks acquired top defencemen Brian Campbell from Buffalo for Steve Bernier and a first round draft pick. The Dallas stars greatly improved their offence with C Brad Richards from Tampa.
Does Calgary need to make a move to compete? One would say yes, but the only available player to move is Huselius (IMO) and the only player we want is Jokinen. Apparently the STARTING price for Jokinen was Tanguay and a 1st rounder which Sutter probably burst out in laughter then proceeded to beat the snot out of Martin.....Other than that, Huselius back to his old team--doubt it. Flames will completely SHOCK fans if they move. Otherwise, all is clear....so far.

The Philadelphia Flyers have sent tough guy defenceman Jim Vandermeer to the Flames for a 2009 third round pick.
Vandermeer, 27, has three goals, 15 points and 71 penalty minutes in 54 games this season with the Blackhawks and Flyers.
He was originally signed as a free agent by Philadelphia in 2000, and spent parts of two seasons with the Flyers before being dealt to the Blackhawks in 2004. Currently he's on a one-year deal signed with Chicago for $1,225,000.
More details to come.

*Six Year Deal Confirmed*
Flames fans should be happy to know that it is now official, Dion Phaneuf will remains a Flame into the 2015 season. Details below.
The rumor mills have been swirling and fans have been sitting on the fence regarding the impending contract with Flames defencemen Dion Phaneuf. Many fans have argued that they'd prefer to keep Huselius and Langkow over Phaneuf, however, in the grand scheme of things, it seems like the hockey minds (namely GM Sutter) know that 4 1st rounders won't add up to a future Pronger-like defencemen. Signing Phaneuf has been a priority after Iginla, Regehr, and Kiprusoff were signed.

What are the latest Flame trade rumors? How about a goalie and a prospect for Mats Sundin?
Makes sense, Craig Conroy was not the #1 people thought he'd be (not us though).
How about Alex Tanguay for Jokinen, or heck, maybe even Ryder? (Dont like that last one).
Both are high profile C that will take 5+ mill to sign next year. Any weight to the rumors? We think the price would be too high to land one of these guys, but then again, we could really use more than one scoring line and Conroy on the 4th isn't a bad idea.
Discuss the viability of these trades in the Flames forum.

The Calgary Flames goaltending tandem went from one of the most questionable to, at least on paper, one that appears solid. Curtis Joseph, a 40 year old netminder recently off a Spengler Cup victory, opted for the Flames to play out the remainder of the season. His deal is for this year alone and will pay him half of 1.5 million. His role will be to push Miikka Kiprusoff who has displayed signs of wear in recent months.
