Calgary 9 - Colorado 1
Well, I do'nt think anybody expected this. The talk of the game before puck drop was the sudden announcement of Peter Foresberg's retirement (officially I guess this time). All the attention was on the iconic power forward, but it was Calgary who would spoil the evening for the home team.
Calgary was stumped in their unbeaten streak during regular time against Vancouver Saturday, the first loss in regulation for the FLames in 12 games. One wondered what Calgary team would show up tonight. It seems as though the this veteran squad gets the program, they were very focussed and came out flying.

Another hockey day in Canada ended with a thrilling game between two divisional rivals.
Three games in four nights didn't really show, but a lack scoring touch sure did. With tonights loss the Flames end a fine run of points in the the last 12 games, no losses in the past 11 regulation. But just like that they actually sit in ninth spot.
Calgary lost against a much better Canucks team, but lets' face it, they stuck in there for most of the game.
They lost for two reasons:
1) Special teams lost the game. Nothing on the PP and two goals against on the PK.
2) In the face-off dot they were major major losers.

heartbreaking loss for the Flames who were two minutes from taking two points in a crucial game against an opponent with only one point more (with a couple games in hand) in the standings.
This post will be made in point form to outline a few items about Calgary's loss, a game that they should've won. Anaheim was one point ahead of the Flames going into tonite's game; a win would put Calgary in 6th spot.
Plainly put, Henrik Karlsson should have plated this game. calgary can't ride Kipper with 70+ games and expect great performances. Is Kipper going to play tomorrow night again back to back? It looks like it, but tonight he could have used the night off because 3 of the 5 goals were very weak.

Say it with me, TIM the "DESTROYER" JACKMAN!
There was a time when the Flames could be down a goal or two and you knew all hope was lost. Nowadays, the Flames stick to the plan and can generally pull wins out of the hat. Granted, they are supposed to beat teams like Ottawa (would be nice if they could've done the same to say NYI) but a win is a win, and in the hotly contested NW division race every single win from here on in will mean the difference between post-season and early golf.

And just like that, 1.5 months of winning and the Calgary Flames are back in the thick of things sitting in 8th place. At the end of December Calgary was sitting in 14th place and needed to be the best team from that point on in order to dream of making the playoffs. Nobody thought it was possible, but the improbable is emerging, fans are getting their car flags out, and the Flames are playing great hockey.

Slow start, great finish.
Calgary stormed back time in and time again to steal a point from a game that would see the winner take sole possession of the 8th and final playoff spot. There's a lot of hockey to be played and the single point is definitely better than none.
Calgary is in the fight of their playoff lives playing team that are in the same boat. In order for the Flames to prevail, however, they need all lines to contribute, and solid goaltending.
Against LA they lacked goaltending early, and point production was left to special teams/top line. Time for others to contribute if the Flames are to continue their success.

Its official. The announcement that we all knew was coming but didn’t want to come. Craig Conroy, number 24 for your Calgary Flames, has retired. Conroy is probably one of the nicest guys I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He is the only one that will ALWAYS stop to sign something or take a picture.

Who would have thought that the Calgary Flames would string together six straight wins and points in the past 11 games? Not me. Calgary still sits around 12th, but only FIVE points separates 12th from 4th. What a wild time to be in the West.
I bet you didn't know that Calgary has NEVER won in Atlanta since they left the city some 25 odd years ago? It's true. But tonite, Calgary posted their sixth straight win and their first ever in Atlanta.

I'll be honest, I didn't think Calgary would pull this one out of the hat, but then again, a lot of people have been discrediting the Flames lately. Their cumulative age perhaps is their biggest asset as they go into games late trailing by a goal or two.
Tonight, playing on what looked like a lake (teams should be fined if they can't be bothered to produce NHL calibre ice), Calgary and Nashville got out to a flying start, but it was a slow mo ping pong match after that.

In the last 16 games the Calgary Flames have only lost three games in regulation. Maybe Darryl Sutter was right.... He did expect the team to turn around right when they did, given the return of all injured players, the team has pulled together some solid hockey since Christmas. Their play has now put them three points out of 7th spot. Of course, they're still 2 points out of 14th....
Consistency from here on in is the name of the game as the Flames aren't out of the woods yet. Two losses puts them back at the bottom, but in the least, going into the All-star break, Calgary can relish their winning ways.
Kipper Plays 500th
