I admit, I missed this game, but from what I hear and see on the official scoresheet is more vets playing and another lose. Kiprusoff is still refining his game, as are many of the vets. The defence is looking for continuity as they let 39 shots on Miikka. Hope for a better effort against San Jose in SJ before the regular season kick starts the 5th.... (Big party my place.)
The Sharks came into town and helped produce a largely entertaining game, that is until the third. The veterans of the Flames are really stepping up, skilles players are scoring, Amonte is still impressing, Iggy scored on a breakaway, Phanuef (not a vet) is quaterbacking the powerplay. Really, when you look at the team, the pieces are coming together.... But wait, problems, the most unlikely places, goal.
Miikka surrendered 6 goals (not including the empty netter), to put in an average game, similar to his last outing which he gave up 3 goals. I'm not worrying, but it's funny to see the fowards doing well (Huselius had two goals tonight), but not him. Fear not, the Flames have Vancouver on Friday where some more vets will get a chance to play, hopefully McCarthy will play some more because he's behind a step right now.
Still time to get together and work out the kinks, Miikka will rebound, don't worry. Soon it will be time to start naming the starting roster. Will Adrei T make the team? He's getting better everyday, but that's all for now, don't forget to join the forum and post your thoughts.
If you recall at the end of last season the Flames announced they were going to open a new sports lounge right in the heart of downtown Calgary. Well I walked by the new location and decided to snap a few photos. (The Gallery as the rest.)
You can see this will replace the old Palace night club on Stephen Ave. A great great place to watch the game and I'm sure it will be a happening place especially for early games (gives a chance for the corporate types to go after work.) Hope I can get in and have an overpriced ale.....
The Flames took game two of the home and home versus the Oilers in pre-season action at Rexall Place. Alex Tanguay showed flashes of what is soon to be a 5 million dollar campaign dominating the top line with Amonte.
Tanguay had a power-play goal and an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 2-1. It's nice to see him get his groove on, but more impressive lately is the play of vet Amonte, who is showing a renewed interest in goal scoring.
Also Mark Giordano is making a case to be the 7th D-Man, and maybe even 6th come opening day as Rhett Warrener is out with a knee injury (Day-to-day). He also scored a power-play goal for the Flames who are now 3-1 in pre-season action. Look for another round of cuts to come either Monday or the day after the next pre-season game (Wednesday at home versus the Sharks.)

The Flames sent r Darryl Sutter announced Friday that the Flames have assigned 19 players to Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.
Goaltender (1): Matt, Keetley
Defencemen (5): Tim Hambly, Steve Marr, Brett Palin, Adam Pardy, Tim Ramholt
Forwards (13): Kris Chucko, Derek Couture, Adam Cracknell, Cam Cunning, Ryan Donally, Carsen Germyn, Tomi Maki, David Moss, Chris Neiszner, Warren Peters, Aki Seitsonen , Justin Taylor, David Van der Gulik
This doesn't mean these players will necessarily stick here as there is more room and tryouts for the Knights. Any players not making the AHL squad will likely play for the Wranglers (Las Vegas)
There was good, bad, and meh, it's regular season. The Flames lost their first pre-season game versus the Oilers at Home. The 4-3 contest was decided in overtime when 3 giveaways one after another lead to an Oiler breakaway for the short-handed game winner.
The big guns were out today, Iginla, Tanguay and Kipper all made their first start. Fireworks were expected and unlikely sources produced them. 6 goals were scored in the first period, all Flames goals from the top line (Lombardi with 2 and Iginla with 1), however, Kipper allowed 3 goals as well.
Brent Krahn came in halfway through the second period and played well, showing promise for future backup, allowing the breakaway goal in OT. Not much can be said about the play of the Flames. The vets look good but it doesn't seem like any rookies will crack the lineup as no single player stood out above the rest.
The 7th D Man spot may be taken by Giordano if one had to choose today, however, there are many games left to play. Other notable exclusions included Yelle, who has yet to see game action.
Although the Calgary Sun said it happened two days ago, the Flames announced that Flames’ first round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Leland Irving, has been assigned to his junior club, the Everett Silvertips.
Irving had a steady camp and said he learned plenty from the other goalies and goalie coach David Marcoux during his two weeks in Calgary. He'll have plently to go on for a year of improvement."I feel I have improved a lot over the last two weeks. There were little things that I could take out of all the goaltenders' games. I've worked a lot on my puck play and that is something I can improve on. I think I can help my junior team by using some of the things I have learned."
The Flames now have 50 players remaining in training camp.

The battle of Alberta will be underway on Thursday, September, 21 at the Pengrowth Saddledome as the undefeated Calgary Flames (2-0) take on the Edmonton Oilers (3-0) in the first game of a home-and –home series. The return game will be in Edmonton on Saturday, September 23 at Rexall Place.
Who woulda thunk it? Jeff Friesen is a fighter, Daymond Langkow likes to drop the gloves with dudes twice his height, and Tony Amonte and score? Ok I'm kidding, kind of, but Friesen had two fights, Langkow held his own, and Amonte had the tying goal in a Flames victory at the 'Dome.
Many PP goals quaterbacked by Phaneuf and Regher helped the Flames cause that saw Curtis M. pick up the win (he played half the game coming in for Mr. noodles, both played well.) Other notable rookies were Boyd: making a case for himself, Ramholt: just staying out of danger, and Ritiche. No wait he's not a rookie....
Note: Warrener left the game after he tweaked his knee, he is currently day-to-day. Iggy and Tangy have yet to suit up, Kipper being the other big name that hasn't seen action, not that he needs to see the ice much in pre-season play.
