Game 41: Flames host the New York Islanders

What a great finish to a terrific start! The Flames not only out shot the Sharks (16-4) but also outperformed them by a score of 3-0 (in the first period) to finish the 60 minutes of play with a 5-2 victory. With a characteristic offensive presentation, Daymond Langkow, Rene Bourque, and Curtis Glencross collected two points each while Mark Giordano and David Moss also chipped in with a goal each to help their team conquer their division rivals. Certainly, this team effort was fully justified last night as the Calgary Flames now host one more game in their first meeting against the New York Islanders on Thursday.

The New York Islanders rank 15th with a total of 12-25-4 and a road record of 5-16-2. Overall, they have a slightly lower power play (18.50%) and penalty killing (82.45%) percentage and accordingly, the Flames have a definite statistical along with home ice advantage over their Eastern conference counterparts. With their offensive efforts and great defensive plays, a victory may come just as easy; yet, the Flames will have to be vigilant about maintaining their own statistics – they have already given up two short handed goals of late. On a confident closing note, their recent triumph over the Sharks will serve as an enhancement to pursue their winning streak again.

Sportsnet (SNET-W) will televise this game on January 8th at 7:00 pm. A play by play coverage will be hosted by Peter Maher and Mike Rogers on Calgary Flames Radio, The Fan 960.
