Its official. The announcement that we all knew was coming but didn’t want to come. Craig Conroy, number 24 for your Calgary Flames, has retired. Conroy is probably one of the nicest guys I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He is the only one that will ALWAYS stop to sign something or take a picture.
Conroy’s career in the NHL has spanned 17 years and 1009 games, 507 of which have been with a Flaming C on his chest! He has recorded 524 points, 182 of which were goals in the regular season and another 30 points in the playoffs. I think it is safe to say he is a Flame for life!
He had a brief stint with the LA Kings that can just be ignored; he was only there for 2 seasons in between, it doesn’t count. It’s too bad he couldn’t stick around to play in the Heritage Classic against the team that originally drafted him but maybe if we’re lucky he’ll get to play in the alumni game that weekend.
Personally, my favourite Conny memory was the first time I met him. I was 10 years old and he came to my school for reading give it a shot, he was incredibly nice and talked to everyone and it was the first autograph I ever received. Since then he has consistently been one of my favourites on and off the ice. This is the most recent picture I have with him at a autograph signing at pro hockey life in Calgary a little while back. He was actually making fun of my Dad right before this picture was taken. He is such an incredible guy to talk to and always up to chat especially about hockey.
Today at his press conference everyone was there and that isn’t an understatement. The entire team, all the training staff and coaching staff as well as all of the media were there to hear what he had to say. It truly is a testament to how much Conny means to everyone. My favourite moment that was captured was actually at his press conference last week by @alex_ruiz where he didn’t really announce anything yet every Calgary media person was there to see him.
The other part of the press conference that I found very entertaining today was that his new title is “Special Assistant to the Acting General Manger†and for a guy with such a personality I can’t think of a better title.
There are many tributes floating around about Mr. Conroy today all of them fitting and not a bad word spoken. This video was played at his 1000th game and shows some of his best moments:Â 1000th game His reminisces with Rob Kerr today on the Fan960 were also great to hear: Craig Conroy with Rob Kerr
And for a good read look up the #Conroy24 hashtag (that was trending in Canada today, way to be Flames fans) on twitter to see all of the amazing things fans have to say about him and too him.
Craig has had a great career here in Calgary and I am so glad that he is sticking around. This city and this organization would not be the same without him and there is no doubt in my mind that #24 will be in hanging in the rafters of the dome very soon!
