7 + 1. That’s how many years Dustin Wolf has committed to the Calgary Flames after signing a new contract worth 7.75 / yr on September 9th. As training camp gets underway, Flames brass are sorting out the pieces for the ‘rebuild’.
Despite only one NHL season under his belt, Wolf has proved enough to warrant a lengthy contract extension. If his play continues to improve, the deal itself will be one of the best value deals in the league in a year or two.
So Calgary has locked up a franchise goalie. They need all-stars on D and F too.
This year all eyes will be on Zayne Parekh to see if the highly touted first round pick can make strides in the NHL. He won’t necessarily dominant, but it’s expected he will dazzle. It’s too early to tell, but if Parekh turns into a franchise defender the Flames will have two pieces in building a contender.
The question is, who is the all-star forward? For that, despite adding more prospects to the cupboard, someone will have to step up. We don’t know who will pan out in the system. Barring a draft day miracle, the Flames may be focussed on finding elite talent up front, a key missing piece to the puzzle. Outside of the magic 2004 run, teams generally need elite forwards to compete, and Calgary just doesn’t have it…yet.
