Yet another installment of the battle of Alberta tonight at the Dome. Gone are the bench brawls and fights, replaced by speed and a different kind of action. Let me give you a quick rundown of how to the first period went. Dropthepuckskaterealfastbackandforthnotwhistlesmaybeashotongoal. And that was the end of the 1st period.

Moving to the second period now, and it started pretty much the same. Everyone in the league knows nobody beats this team 5v5, but special teams is a different story. Horcoff scored on the PP early in the second as the Flames PK continues to … suck. No shorthanded goals in the second for the Flames, but they would cash in on the PP.

Get this Jarome Iginla scored on the PP–wait a minute–let me check that again. What?! Jeff Friesen gets his first goals a Flames and his first goal in over 50 games snapping a nice shot over the shoulder of Roloson to tie the game up at 1-1. That’s all I’ll say about him for now.

Nothing to report until the third when things sorta broke loose. A soft call, albeit a penalty, was called against Edmonton midway through the third. On th ensuing PP guess what? Calgary scores yet again with some interesting PP antics. They’ve waiting 1/2 a season to pull out Phanuef down low.  Basically, the play has one guy high and the rest down low with Phanuef screening. It paid off as Mr. Dangle Huselius made a beauty pass to Phanuef who got the game winner.

That wasn’t all for the Flames. With the Oilers pressing Lombardi (Mr. 1 year deal who needs to prove everything this year to cash in big time) was hit with a pass and broke down the wing at top speed. This guy is amazing when it comes to wheels, the new NHL was built around players like Lombardi. I hope he scores 25+ this season; tonight he slid one home against Roloson to give the Flames a nice cushion.

If anything, the Flames came out hitting hard and yet again dominated 5v5. The Oilers probably lost the game on some weak goaltending as all three goals were stoppable.

Notes: Godard played a solid 3 minutes, but I”ll take it. Friesen scored his first. Amonte needs to pot all his glorious chances. Zyuzin got back into the lineup and played well.
