A veteran team with veteran coaches continue to soul search for answers to their wayward problems. Calgary couldn’t score, and special teams sucked wind as the Flames dropped another contests against a mediocre team. This only means that Calgary is itself–less than mediocre. This doesn’t bode well with fans who are starting to get ancy at the mid-way point of the 07-08 season.
Calgary fell behind after short handed goal thanks to the ‘one a game’ brain fart from Tanguay. Trying to shake things up Keenan deployed two forwards and three defencemen on the next PP which paid off when Phaneuf centered the puck from behind the net to an uncovered Iginla in the slot for the goal.
Calgary would take the same approach in its next power play, but this time with the same defensive trio of Phaneuf, Aucoin, and Anders Eriksson on the ice forgot they were defensemen and allowed the SECOND short-handed goal of the game.
Yet another loss. Calgary plays COlorado Saturday for an important divisional game but at this point they are three points out of top in the NW and 3 points out of bottom in the West. Too closer to call, but at this point, we all know that we’re far from being an elite team.
Can someone explain to me how we go from one of the best supported teams in the leauge to one of the worst. I have never been to a professional sports game with an atmosphere that ranks with a noise level equivalent to that of a sunday church service. Its pathetic especially considering our ticket cost is one of the highest in the leauge. It should be an event going to watch the flames play and man its the farthest thing from that. You hear all flames fans talking about where the intensity is in our play and that there seems to be no drive behind our players. So we immediatly blame the coach ( which with Keenen is valid) but where are we the fans. Theres nothing more inspiring then playing for a crowd a city that you now can lift your spirits no matter what circumstance the team is faced with. Take the 04 season, there is no way Calgary had the caliber of players to go as far as they did but opposing teams knew when they came to Calgary it would be a tuff place to pull off a win.
I believe if you truly consider yourself a Calgarian, a flames fan its time to start acting like one. This place should be a feared city to play hockey in and theres no excuse to why it shouldnt be.
Doesn’t help that
a) Flames can’t win at home
b) The lower bowl houses the classy and quiet corporate class
c) the roof is paneled with sound dampeners so the loudest sections are never heard at ice level.
