While the Flames site second last in theWest division, the Omaha Knights are on a happy 5 game win streak. The Knights beat the San Antonio Rampage 4-3 on the weekend for their latest win.
The Knights opened the scoring early in the first period when Brandon Prust collected his first goal of the season just 56 seconds into the game. Richie Regehr took a booming shot from the blueline. It hit ex-Flames goalie Phil Sauve in the shoulder and dropped behind him. Prust raced in and poked the puck into an empty net.
Their increased 2-0 when Dustin Boyd took a drop pass from Tomi Maki and beat Sauve with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season. The second period began much the same with another early Knights goal. Carsen Germyn earned his second goal in as many games when he finished a two-on-one rush with Boyd at 1:17.
Knight’s goalie Curtis McElhinney’s eventually had his shutout string at 93:28 end, but it’s nice to see him play solid hockey down south.
The Knight’s power play actually scores, Boyd found Dave Moss alone in front of Sauve. He slipped the puck home for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Andrei Taratukhin earned the other assist.
The Knights kept San Antonio pinned into its own end for most of the third but in the late going, the Rampage pulled Sauve for an extra attacker and got a break when Brett Palin was whistled for cross checking. With a six on four advantage, Helmer got his second of the night to make it 4-3.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 5-0-1-0.
