The Flames haven’t beaten the Oilers in a couple of years. Before that, there was a stretch of what seemed like 10 years that Calgary kept winning. But as of late, the Flames couldn’t get up for the Battle of Alberta. Tonight it changed, most in part thanks to the play of Mike Smith in goal who was outstanding.
Now will it be enough to start a trend as the season fades and the playoff aspirations with it?
Here’s what we know, sitting outside of the playoff picture the Flames control their destiny. They play the teams ahead of them for a possible 6-8 point swing. Divisional games will make or break the season. Which team will show up? Will the top players play their best? The inconsistent Flames haven’t demonstrated they’re able to string together wins. It’s tough to say if they’ll do it when it matters most.
