If there was any question about the effectiveness of the closed door meetings after the abysmal loss Calgary took against the Florida Panthers then look no further then tonight. In comeback fashion Calgary engineered 3 third period goals to take game 2 of this year’s battle of Alberta. It was only a week ago that Calgary took a beating on all levels versus the Oil. Tonight, on home ice, they managed to dominate all facets of the game to eek out a win.

Florida doesn’t get much snow. In fact, they barely have a fan base. If Florida’s top line hadn’t amassed a point, only rare scoring chances, nobody would care. If management brought back old faces touting a new renewed opportunity for Stanley Cup glory, only Panther fans from Canada would care. But alas, Calgary isn’t a tropical state, but a hardened snow infested land with diehard hockey fans.
Too bad the local team is pooping the bed.
Just game three yet the chorus of boos in the ‘Dome was resounding. Yes fans, this Flames team looks worse than last season. Personnel have definitely improved but the product on the ice pails in comparison to a Washington Montreal game. In fact, most Flames fans feel asleep in during tonight’s game. Why? Cause watching the FLames is painful.

After an embarrassing blowout to start the NHL season, Calgary looked to rebound in their home opener against an LA team fresh off a win last night against Vancouver. Things didn’t get off to a good start for the Flames. On Adam Pardy’s first shift he threw his shoulder out trying to deliver a check. On Rene Bourque’s second shift he was blind-sided and hit in the head. Both let the game and didn’t return.
That brings the total tally of injured forwards to Stajan (2nd line C), now Bourque (2nd line LW), Kotalik (2nd line RW), Moss (3rd line C), and Langkow (C). The only good thing about the Pardy loss is one of the vets Cory Sarich or Steve Staios will finally get into the lineup.
Despite losing their entire second line and half of their third, the Flames still battled hard. Thanks to the pluggers Calgary was able to pull out a victory.

Terrible: Calgary 0 – Oilers 4
Welcome back Flames Forum fans to another fantastic (we hope) season! The wait is finally over, and the anticipation has been killing all hockey fans around the globe. Today the puck dropped literally across the world with Carolina v. Minnesota in Finland to start things off. But forget about those two no name teams, let’s talk Flames, Oilers, Battle of Alberta part 1 of 8.
Unfortunately for Flames fans they crapped the bed in a big way. This evening’s battle was ALL Edmonton in every way. No hyperbole can describe how bad the Flames played. In all facets of the game they were utterly pathetic. Even the goon Ivanans got knocked the F out by McinTyre (another fantastic Darryl Sutter move to pick up a fighter who can’t fight (McGrattan is worse how?) and who’s locked down for two years…..and can’t skate). Yes Flames fans, if tonight is any indication, it’s going to be a long year.

You’ll note what I said about last game:
…you’re going to get destroyed in Vancouver to emphasize everything that’s wrong with this hapless club.
The Flames didn’t even show up tonight; they were an embarrassment to hockey, the club, and the city. Clearly this club is garbage, and the sad part is, they are EXPENSIVE garbage.
Lots to talk about in the post-season wrap up, but most will need a few weeks to unwind from a horrific end to the 2009-2010 Flames season.

The Calgary Flames, against another team not making the playoffs and without 6 of their starters and playing their third string goalie, got embarrassed at home on ‘fan appreciation’ night.
Low scoring with no scoring in the shoot-out (Iginla now 0-4 this year).
Thanks for nothing Flames, you’re going to get destroyed in Vancouver to emphasize everything that’s wrong with this hapless club.

It’s all done. Tonight’s loss against SJ and Colorado’s impending win, has put the nail in the coffin for the Flames’ playoff chances. The league’s NUMBER ONE underperforming NHL team won’t make the playoffs.
The team will break for summer early, look at the themselves in the mirror, and wonder what will happen next.
One thing’s for sure, fans won’t tolerate this team anymore. 1/3 of it changed 2/3 of the way through the season, it wasn’t good enough. No. We need changes that propel this team into the NEW NHL. Not the old systems the Sutter’s hold dear, we need changes that will help the team, not change for change sake.
More coverage to come on this debacle of a season.

There’s a reason why the Flames will never win the Cup–they aren’t a good hockey team. Yes, they are almost playing against the salary cap (the max), but inreality they are overpaid to under perform. But don’t you think the Flames should AT LEAST make the playoffs? Can’t do that either it seems. Yes, mathematically the team is still in it, but when you’re top players (Iginla no goals in 8 games, Bouwmeester 3 goals ALL YEAR!?) can’t score, you’re not going to perform in the playoffs let alone up to average standards.
This afternoon Calgary had a chance to go two points ahead of Colorado who play tonight against SJ. Instead the team pooped the bed yet again. The only goal was scored by a defencemen, the forwards can’t score for the life of them (and no I don’t think getting rid of iginla is the answer, but having him score the odd goal would be nice.)
Frankly, the Flames played a potential Stanley Cup contender and were horribly outclassed. The main difference? The Flames have zero scoring. And no, the Toronto Maple Leafs cast aways are not the answer to our problems.

It comes down to this….well actually the last five games are all ‘it comes down to this’ games. Tonight was particularly important because Calgary was playing the Avalanche who were two points ahead of the FLames holding the 8th and final playoff spot. A win would give the Flames a chance, a loss would probably end it for good. 2 weeks ago I thought it was all over, and in many ways it is, but Calgary still has a glimmer of hope to make the post-season this year.

Calgary seems to wanna play hardcore hockey at the tail end of the season. Who would expect that the Flames would be where they are now, in 9th place looking at a glimmer of hope to make the playoffs. They wouldn’t be in this place if they played CONSISTENT hockey. But the fact is we’re missing pieces and performers.
Tonight Mikael Backlund looked like the hottest Flames making some neat passes we haven’t seen in ages. He set up the eventual game-winning goal scored by Ales Kotalik. Is it too little too late? Perhaps, but at least it makes Friday’s game against Colorado all the more interesting (given the fact the Avs lost tonight and that game will put Calgary in a tie for 8th if they win.)
Go Flames…. I guess.
